Limoges Carnival features among the city’s most popular events. It is estimated that some 60,000 people attend the procession, which is entirely free of charge. The event is organised on the first Sunday in March along a route of about 3 kilometres through the streets of the city centre, and ends by the drowning of the Carnival King in the Vienne after this grand spectacle lasting three hours. There are 15 floats on a different theme each year, and some 20 groups providing music and entertainment in the procession. All styles of music are represented (folk, traditional or street bands, show bands, historic groups, artistic groups, visual attractions…). Alongside the local groups, top-quality bands are invited from all over France and around Europe (ten or so each year). About 1,200 people are involved in the entertainment, plus the municipal staff, police and a large number of volunteers (between 250 and 300) in charge of preparing and supervising the procession.
