In addition to several woodland areas, 70,000 trees were counted in public places around Limoges in a computerised inventory. Limoges sets itself apart with no less than 376 special trees (yellow poplars in La Fayette park, hawthorn trees in Victor-Thuillat park, lime trees on rue du Mas-Bilier, Southern magnolias on rue du Chinchauvaud…) which are protected under local urban policy. The city plantation programme was increased after the devastation caused by the storm of 1999 and the tree species introduced were selected with this in mind; the poplars of Beaubreuil have been replaced with more resistant trees such as oak, maple, chestnut and hackberry trees. Each year, the Department for Green Land plants approximately two times more trees than it removes, with children from local schools actively participating in the operation.
