Limoges is the sponsor of the "Tonnerre" Landing Helicopter Dock

Commissioned at the start of 2007, the “Tonnerre” LHD is one of the largest in the French Navy.

The town is a sponsor of this project in order to:

  • demonstrate its attachment to maintaining and strengthening the links between the nation and its armed forces,
  • continue to offer young people from Limoges looking for a professional vocation a "showcase" giving them concrete contact with a variety of professions and training courses,
  • create original collaborations between the Navy and the town’s schools,
  • have an ambassador permanently on the move, open to original public relations exercises destined for the world of enterprise and associations.

Several of the corridors of the ship bear the names of streets in Limoges: Place Denis Dussoubs, Rue Jean Jaurès, Rue Monte-à-regret…

In 2009 Limoges was awarded the Sponsorship Trophy from the Association of Sponsor Towns. “Operation Tonnerre” is one of the actions rewarded by this Trophy.

Following the success of Operation Tonnerre in 2008 (an educational project set up by the schools of René Blanchot and Jean le Bail), a new project has been set up during the 2012-2013 school year to facilitate exchange with the Tonnerre, with the primary schools of Vigenal and Bellevue selecting two classes to maintain a special relationship with the crew of the projection and command ship.

Over the course of the year, the two classes (CM2) will develop an exchange of correspondence with the officers and sailors of the Tonnerre. The children will also address the maritime world with their teachers through a variety of cross-curricular activities in diverse subjects (geography, mathematics, history...).
As the highlight of the project, students will have the opportunity to travel to Toulon in February 2013 to discover the ship and its facilities, meet the crew and visit the city of Toulon.

The two classes will also participate in the National Competition of Sponsor Cities entitled "Captain Aude Tissier - Commander Caroline Aigle" organised by the Association of Sponsor Cities.
The competition invites schools based in sponsor cities to create a project based on the use of information and communication technologies in education (ICTE). The work carried out by the contending classes should also display an educational aspect, with an emphasis on dialogue between the children of the "partner classes" and the sponsor military units, and on the sharing of their experiences.

This sponsorship enables the development of socio-educational links which are extremely profitable in educational terms. It is an exceptional resource for cultural awareness and contributes to educating young people about values of citizenship and the defence of the rule of law, whilst allowing them to discover professional roles in the marine sector.

Limoges city council is in regular contact with members of the vessel’s crew, and was delighted to welcome delegations for the 11th November memorial service in 2008 and 2012, for the 14th July parade in 2009, for the inauguration of the official model of the Tonnerre projection and command ship constructed by Mr Martial in 2010 (exhibited in the town hall) and for the inauguration of the Museum of Resistance in 2012.
